How does collagen affect my eyelids?
Collagen is produced by fibroblast cells in the skin’s dermis and plays an important role in providing structure and support to skin and muscles of the face and eye. Collagen is also a major component of the skin’s composition, with 80% of the skin’s composition being collagen.
Loss of collagen is a natural result of aging; an average adult is estimated to lose around 1% of collagen per year as they age. Facial sagging, folds, open pores, wrinkles and fine lines are the most obvious visible signs of collagen loss, and hence, aging.

Thermage FLX Eye is a skin rejuvenating treatment that uses monopolar radiofrequency (RF) technology to regenerate collagen and tighten skin by remodelling the collogen in the skin:
- Heat is used to breach into the layers of the skin, delivering RF energy deep into the dermis.
- RF energy causes water molecules to separate from the collogen structure, making them contract immediately and bring about three-dimensional tightening. In addition to this, the collogen structure will continue to contract over the next few months, causing the skin to tighten further and become smoother as time passes.
- The controlled heat damage inflicted on the collagen molecules when the RF energy is shot into the dermis also triggers the body’s natural repair response, stimulating the production of new collagen.

What to expect during a Thermage FLX Eye Session?
Prior to treatment, the use of chemical exfoliants and retinoids should be halted for at least two days. On the day of the treatment, our clinic’s staff will cleanse the treatment area to ensure that it is clean, dry, and free of makeup and/or other skin products. Marking paper that resembles a grid-like temporary tattoo will then be applied to the area around the eyes.
To protect the eyes from the RF energy, eye shields will be inserted like contact lenses over the eyeballs. Numbing eyedrops will be applied to the eyeballs before insertion to minimise discomfort.
Patients who use contact lenses are advised to avoid wearing contact lenses for 24 hours post procedure. A pair of glasses should be brought along for use post procedure.
To facilitate the flow of RF current through the body, a return pad, with a return pad cable clipped on it, will be applied on your back or thigh. The return pad cable is needed for the RF current to pass out of the body. Water-based coupling fluid may also be applied to the skin to improve RF conduction during the treatment.
The treatment tip will then deliver RF energy/current across the treatment area according to the grid marks on the marking paper. Each shot of RF energy delivered can be expected to feel like a warm pulse into the skin.

Metal jewellery (for example, earrings), metal accents on your clothing, and any metal pieces like bra hooks or zippers must be removed from the body and head prior to treatment as the monopolar RF energy used might heat up the metal and cause discomfort or pain.
Patients with orthodontic braces are suitable for Thermage FLX Eye treatment.
You can expect to feel a deep heating sensation in the form of warm pluses followed by a cooling sensation accompanied by gentle vibrations during treatment. A tingling or slightly stinging sensation can also be expected.
