Cafe-au-Lait Spots Treatment

Café-au-Lait spots are light-brown or tan macules that occur on the skin. They are caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes. These spots can vary in size and shape, and can appear anywhere on the body. In some cases, multiple café-au-lait spots may be present, which can be a sign of a genetic condition such as neurofibromatosis type 1.

Pathophysiology

The overproduction of melanin in café-au-lait spots is caused by a genetic alteration that affects the regulation of melanin synthesis. This alteration leads to an increase in melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, in the affected area. As a result, the affected skin becomes darker in color.

Management Options

There are several options for managing café-au-lait spots, including:

Topical Treatments: Topical creams containing hydroquinone, tretinoin, and corticosteroids can be used to lighten the affected area.

Microdermabrasion: This minimally invasive procedure uses fine crystals to remove the outer layer of skin, resulting in a lighter appearance.

Cryotherapy: This procedure involves the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze the affected skin, causing it to peel off and reveal lighter skin underneath.

Pico Laser: This laser treatment is also often used for acne scar treatment in Singapore. It uses high-intensity light to break down the melanin in the affected area.

532nm Wavelength for Café-au-Lait Spots

The 532nm wavelength is commonly used in laser treatments for café-au-lait spots. This wavelength is absorbed by melanin, causing the melanin to break down and be reabsorbed by the body. This results in a lighter appearance of the affected area.

In conclusion, café-au-lait spots are caused by an overproduction of melanin, which can be managed through various treatment options, including topical treatments, microdermabrasion, cryotherapy, and laser treatments, such as the Pico laser with a 532nm wavelength. Consult with a dermatologist to determine the best course of treatment for your individual needs.

Why Choose The Clifford Clinic?

  • Multiple Laser Platforms for Pigmentation
The clinic offers both Q-switched and Pico lasers, with varying wavelengths (532nm, 755nm, 1064nm) to target melanin at different depths—allowing for more effective treatment of café-au-lait spots based on lesion characteristics.

  • Experience with Resistant or Recurrent Lesions
Protocols are adapted for cases where café-au-lait spots have been resistant to previous treatments, incorporating staged sessions and combination therapies as needed.

  • Risk Management for Asian and Sensitive Skin
Treatment settings are selected to minimise risks of hypopigmentation or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly important for patients with darker or more reactive skin types.
