Acne Treatment Step 1 - Facial Treatments
Controlling inflammation is key with the right combination of medications and skincare especially for comedogenic skin. To do this, we utilise number of treatment strategies to control inflammation.
Hydrafacial is an award-winning technology which uses vortex cleansing to deep cleanse pores and remove micro-blockages. Debris and congestion such as blackheads and whiteheads are removed from pores while the medical grade facial works to cleanse, extract, and hydrate. With this gentle exfoliation process, you can uncover a new layer of skin and achieve better acne control. If left untreated, these micro-blockages usually progress to full blown acne and pimples. By preventing pores from getting blocked in the first place, acne is better controlled with the Hydrafacial.
Our hydrafacial is combined with Alphalight, a treatment which employs photodynamic (PDT) therapy to kill deep seated bacteria. With this treatment, patients often notice immediate reduction of redness and inflammation after one treatment. Between 5-10 treatments are needed to clear up the whole face.
Acne Treatment Step 2 - Laser Treatments
Laser treatments can be an effective part of an acne treatment plan. Lasers produce intense monochromatic light varied by a narrow band of wavelengths, and they are able to target the P. acnes bacteria that often resides on the skin and contributes to acne breakouts. Additionally, different lasers of different wavelengths can also target the excessive blood vessels around the inflamed areas, as well as the pigmentation and scars left behind when the acne heals.
For acne treatment, the Q-switched laser and the Vbeam lasers are excellent no-downtime options. The latest acne treatment in Singapore available includes the use of diode laser especially for the treatment of back acne.
In the skilled hands of an aesthetic doctor, laser treatment for acne is one of the more preferred method because it is fast and effective. The laser procedure is typically done during lunchtime, with no downtime associated with the treatment so you can resume your activities for the day. Each treatment takes between 10-15 minutes to complete, and sunblock and cosmetics can be applied immediately after the treatment.
Acne Treatment Step 3 - Selective Follicle Treatment
One of the latest advancements and addition to Singapore’s acne treatment is AGNES, which offers a permanent and long-term solution to acne breakouts, as it targets the root of the problem. AGNES works by selectively shrinking the sebaceous glands to effectively reduce recurrent acne. Conceived and commonly used in Korea, Dr Chow Yuen Ho and Dr Gerard Ee are the pioneer doctors to introduce AGNES to Singapore. As the pioneering clinic for AGNES in Singapore, The Clifford Clinic has developed a proven safety record and effective acne protocol which resolves cases of adult acne and stubborn acne that defies normal treatments.
If your acne is persisting into adulthood and tends to recur in the same few areas, then AGNES is the solution to your acne. In fact, some of our patients can report that their acne will sometimes recur in the same exact spot. This is a tell-tale sign that that particular pore has been damaged.
With AGNES, our doctors will look at your skin under high magnification. We can then identify which pore has been damaged by scarring, and is causing recurrent acne. Our doctors will then treat each pore with a tiny burst of RF energy that is enough to shrink the oil gland under that damaged pore. Once the oil gland has been reduced, that pore is treated and chances of acne recurring over that pore again are significantly decreased.
Acne Treatment Step 4 - Topical and Oral Therapy
Aside from clinical acne treatments, you will need to ensure that your daily skincare regimen is well balanced for your individual skin type to maintain the results of your acne treatment. Using a range of clinic prescribed skincare can help to optimally achieve oil control without facing excessive dryness of the skin. Frequently, acne prone skin is deficient in two types of free fatty acids, namely linolenic and linoleic acid. To replenish this, our oil glands secrete sebum, which contains excessive oily substances, hence making the skin too oily and shiny-looking. At The Clifford Clinic, our signature Clifford Balancing Cream product is able to restore the levels of these missing free fatty acids without causing excessive oiliness.
Our range of acne treatment skincare is designed help you maintain an optimal balance of hydration on your skin, while controlling acne breakouts and pimples. We also carry a wide range of supplements and medications customised to individual skin conditions in order to control bacteria overgrowth and excessive oiliness of the skin. For severe cystic acne and nodular acne, oral medication may be required.
Complications of Acne Treatment
The common complications of acne treatment in Singapore are redness, peeling and flaking. This is usually because the creams which we use for this treatment are slightly drying and irritating to the skin. Some of the drugs which we use can also cause photosensitivity. Although a little bit of irritation and dry skin is inevitable, it is important that the skin is cared for with hydration and protected adequately with sun protection products.
During the course of the acne treatment, we will constantly review and adjust the levels of dryness and irritation of the skin in order to improve the tolerability of the treatment. Over time, the skin will adapt to the treatment, and become balanced. This takes on average 4 weeks after the start of the acne treatment.
Usually, patients can see immediate improvements to their acne condition after treatment is initiated. However, there are some patients (roughly 10%) who may actually get a flare up of their acne after starting acne treatment. This is due to the skin which is purging out the impurities and blockages.
Acne can be completely cured, and you can have smooth skin in most cases. 90% of our cases have good responses to the treatment, which means they can be almost fully cured. A remaining 10% may still face persistent acne, and these cases will need to undergo for more treatments to fully cure their acne.
There are many types of acne but the two most common types are adolescent and adult acne. Adolescent acne, which happens while you are in your teenage years, can be fully cured, but the mainstay of treatment is to control the excessive oiliness of the skin until you are past those adolescent years and your skin stabilises. The acne will automatically gradually decrease and you may no longer face anymore breakouts.
On the other hand, adult acne can be terribly persistent which can even last up to decades. From hormones to stress and environmental pollution, there are a number of triggers to adult acne. Besides customising your skincare routine and take care of your diet, choosing the best acne treatment in Singapore can provide an effective and lasting cure for your adult acne.
You should avoid popping your pimples by yourself. If you do need to get an extraction, have it done professionally and medically in clinic, where there are expert professionals who are trained and experienced in extraction techniques. This reduces the risk of secondary infections and worsening of the acne situation, and also reduces risk of scars forming.
