Acne Scar Treatment Options
If home remedies and over-the-counter acne treatments have not been highly effective to cure your acne and treat your scars, acne scar treatment is one of our signature treatments at The Clifford Clinic. We have been treating acne scars for over a decade with various types of treatments in Singapore. Over the years, our acne scar treatment protocols have evolved to become more effective while reducing pain and downtime for our patients.
There are different types of acne scars that cause concern, distress and sometimes embarrassment for our patients. These are:
Pigmented and Red Acne Scar Treatment or Blemishes
Finding the best acne spot treatment for you can help to take down the inflammation and cure your pimples to avoid minimal scarring. Typically, after acne has subsided, the pimples will commonly leave behind a spot, blemish or mark which is usually brown or red in colour. This is caused by the inflammation and tissue damage during the pimple/acne phase, and leaves a blemish behind when it heals. Laser treatment and a combination of lightening agents are used to gradually lighten and get rid of these acne scars without causing any downtime. We use the Q-switch laser to lighten brown marks, and the V-beam laser to lighten red marks. Often, a combination of the two is necessary as an effective acne marks removal treatment at a reasonable cost.
Rolling Acne Scar Treatment
For milder cases of acne, the skin often heals well. Although, after years of repeated acne, shallow pits may eventually form in the skin. These undulations in the skin look like rolling hills and are hence, aptly named rolling acne scars. As a solution to treat these scars, the treatment involves inducing the skin’s collagen production so a fresh layer of collagen will be produced underneath the epidermis. This will thicken the skin and fill or reduce skin imperfections, thus smoothening the skin surface’s appearance.
Using the Edge Fractional CO2 laser, the depressed scars are made shallower by breaking down scar fibres while promoting collagen regeneration and pore shrinking. Infini and Fraxel are also effective as rolling acne scar treatment methods.
Boxcar and Ice Pick Acne Scar Treatment
Boxcar scars are deep craters with almost vertical walls, while ice pick scars are narrow mouth and very deep. They have the appearance of someone having chipped away at your skin with an ice pick scar, hence the name. These scars are often formed after suffering from severe nodular and cystic acne. People with such scars can benefit from more intense treatments like Infini Fractional Radiofrequency, Edge CO2 Laser Treatment, or Fraxel Dual for faster results.
Infini Fractional RF Treatment
This is the single best treatment for very deep acne scars. This minimally invasive treatment utilises microneedles which is pressed against your skin and sends precise radiofrequency (RF) energy up to 3.5mm deep to multiple layers below the surface. This results in stimulating your body’s natural collagen and healing processes, for the removal of acne spots, marks and scars. It has the added advantage of lifting the face, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and overall, provide significant improvements as a skin rejuvenation procedure.
Fraxel Dual Laser
The Fraxel Dual is a dual wavelength 1550nm and 1927 nm laser which effectively resurfaces scarred skin through a partially ablative laser resurfacing technique. This minimizes downtime while providing maximal results.
Edge Fractional CO2 laser
This treatment is ideal for depressed acne scars, which has a depth of up to 1.5mm deep. The laser delivers extremely fine beams to treat intensively within the targeted zones to stimulate the body’s collagen production while the surrounding healthy tissues helps to speed up overall healing. Overall, it will make your skin fairer and smoother with a more radiant glow. Scars will also get shallower and lighter. With a reasonable price point, this treatment is a great option for those who are cost-conscious.
Deep Chemical Peels
Deep Chemical Peeling using TCA Cross technique is an aggressive but effective method for treatment of acne scars. The scar tissue is ablated, and leaves behind granulation tissue which remodels the scar bases.
To get rid of very deep acne scars, we use the subcision acne scar treatment to break down certain skin scars and add some filler to get an immediate lifting of the scar. With needle subcision, we use a fine needle that goes under the scar to break up the tight collagen bands under the skin. This will then stimulate collagen growth and repair during the healing phase and see an improvement of the scar appearance over time. This option should be used selectively and is only suitable for certain individuals depending on personal skin condition.
