Knee pain makes stairs, squats, long walks and sport hard. When the pain keeps coming back despite exercise and physiotherapy, a PRP knee injection uses your own platelets to settle the joint and ease pain for months. It is done in one visit and you walk out afterwards.
What is a PRP knee injection
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. A small tube of your own blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge. This separates the platelets, which carry natural growth factors, from the red blood cells. The concentrated platelets are then injected into your knee joint.
Who a PRP knee injection helps
PRP suits you if you have
- early to moderate knee osteoarthritis
- cartilage wear in one part of the knee
- a knee that aches after walking, stairs or exercise
- pain that has not settled with physiotherapy and strengthening
- a wish to delay or avoid knee surgery
PRP is less suited to severe bone on bone arthritis with a marked bow leg or knock knee. Your doctor will tell you honestly if a knee replacement would serve you better.
RegenPRP, a leukocyte poor PRP
Not all PRP is the same. The Clifford Clinic uses RegenPRP, a closed, sterile kit that gives a consistent PRP with most of the white blood cells and red blood cells removed. This is called leukocyte poor PRP. For knee osteoarthritis it carries a high dose of growth factors with less risk of a painful flare after the injection. Trials comparing PRP types have found leukocyte poor PRP does better in the knee.
What happens during a PRP knee injection
- Consultation. The doctor examines your knee and reviews your X ray or MRI.
- Blood draw. A small tube of blood is taken from your arm. It feels like a routine blood test.
- Preparation. The blood is spun in the RegenPRP kit to concentrate the platelets.
- Injection. Numbing cream is applied to the skin, then the PRP is injected into the knee joint. The injection itself takes only a few minutes.
- Home. You walk out of the clinic the same day.
A knee injection does not need ultrasound. The knee is a large joint and the doctors place the needle by its landmarks.
After your PRP knee injection
The knee can feel full, stiff or sore for a day or two. Avoid anti inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen for a short while, as they can dull the platelets. Keep walking, then build back into strengthening and sport as your doctor advises. Read more in what to expect after a knee injection.
How long a PRP knee injection lasts
Relief builds over the first few weeks. A PRP knee injection is one injection, repeated 6 to 12 months later if the knee needs it. Strengthening the thigh and hip muscles and keeping a healthy weight make the result last longer.
PRP vs hyaluronic acid vs steroid knee injection
A steroid injection works within days but fades within weeks, and repeated steroid can speed up cartilage loss. Hyaluronic acid gel lubricates the joint and gives several months of relief. PRP builds more slowly and, in trials, gives better pain relief and function than hyaluronic acid at six to twelve months. Compare all options on the knee injection page, or see hyaluronic acid knee injections and Conjuran knee injections.
