Who TCA Cross is for and What It Can Do for Your Scars

Availably in many aesthetic clinics in Singapore, TCA Cross is a specialized treatment that involves the chemical reconstruction of skin scars (CROSS) with the use of Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). It is a medium to deep chemical peel that is used to treat wrinkles, photo aging and help in acne scar removal. Cystic acne is a common skin condition that can result in mild to severe atrophic, hypertrophic or keloid scars. These acne scars can be a cause to emotional and psychological distress.

The procedure involves a deposit of highly concentrated TCA in small amounts onto the surface of the scar. This will cause a local inflammatory reaction that will lead to form new collagen fibres. The result is an improved appearance of the scar, as the process helps to increase the collagen production and skin thickening as well as reduce shadows cast over acne scar depressions.

Who is suitable for TCA CROSS?

This treatment is suitable for young and old, and all skin types. It is very effective for rolling, boxcar and ice-pick acne scars. On its own, it can work well for mild-moderate scar types. But for more severe acne scars, it is often used in combination with other acne treatment in Singapore for removing scars.

The decision to perform the treatment depends on the type and severity of acne scarring, and the patient’s preference and expectations.

How is the process?

The face will initially be cleaned and primed, before applying a numbing cream. An applicator will be used to apply the TCA within the targeted scar tissue. The treated area will turn to a white ‘frost’, and that means the proteins in the skin are being denatured. You may experience a warm heating sensation and the process is repeated to treat each individual scar.

After the procedure is done, an antibiotic ointment is applied to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. It should also be applied in the first week at regular intervals along with use of sun protection.

What is the number of treatments required?

This depends on the severity of the case and individual condition. Typically, 2 to 6 courses of treatment may be required, at 4 to 6 week intervals in between. This will help in skin healing and collagen remodeling. Patients can expect to see a 1 to 2 grade improvement over a period of 6 months in their acne scars.

For acne scar removal, TCA CROSS can also be combined with other treatments such as Edge Fractional CO2 and Infini Acne Scar Treatment.
