Top Causes Of Hair-Loss And The Ideal Treatment Solution

Over the years, we have become more conscious of our health and skincare. Possibly due to the popularity of social media and how we wish to look to our friends and colleagues both online and offline, the stigmatisation of balding has slowly increased. More men and women have started opting for hair loss treatments in Singapore, all while making sure that they receive the necessary care in order to look good and feel good. Everyone has a desire for a natural look, emphasising how they look in pictures and photos with friends and family.

From Hollywood celebrities to sports stars, many have decided to act on their receding hairline and pattern baldness by taking back their right to how they should look. Here are a few ways of what can cause hair loss and your ideal hair loss treatment.

1. Stress

Did you know that the average person loses 50-100 hairs a day? That’s 0.0001% of our total hair, as we have around 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on our head. However, with the fast-paced living environments of Singapore, that number could easily increase up to 150 or more. Whether it is trying to provide for ourselves or our family, it can be difficult to cope with the weight and the pressure. Results have shown that high-stress levels can be associated with hair loss, especially telogen effluvium (a scalp disorder characterised by shedding of hair), trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) and alopecia areata (spot baldness). While stress is temporary, hair loss could become permanent for you if it is not taken care of in time.

2. Lack of proper nutrients

Nutritional deficiency can be a significant factor in reactive hair loss, namely telogen effluvium. In 2019, a hair restoration specialist pointed out that poor food nutrition can affect hair growth. Due to the popularity of veganism, the lack of proper nutrients can be a major factor of telogen effluvium if your body does not absorb enough nutrients. Some of these nutrients include protein, calories, vitamins (vitamin A, C, D and E), iron and biotin.

3. Using natural hair treatment products

While there are many natural hair treatment products out there that range from shampoo to hair supplements, some of these methods of self-treating might not be an effective solution. For example, minoxidil, an FDA-approved over-the-counter medication, is used for hair loss for both men and women. However, while it stimulates hair growth in the short-term; if not taken daily, minoxidil is not effective.

4. Certain hairstyles

Certain excessive hairstyles have a way to cause severe hair loss. This is called traction alopecia, a form of gradual hair loss that is caused by pulling force on it directly. For men, the hairstyles to avoid include cornrows and dreadlocks, whereas women should avoid tight braids or ponytails. Over time, hair follicles can become irreversibly damaged, preventing hair from re-growing.

As years pass, the introduction of new and better hair loss treatments have emerged. The question remains: what is the best hair transplant when it comes to hair loss?

Introducing FUE: the ideal hair loss treatment

Hair transplant FUE, also known as Follicular Unit Extraction, is one of the best and most popular hair loss treatment in Singapore and the world over. It provides a minimally intrusive hair transplant surgery that first appeared in clinics in 2002.

What makes hair transplant FUE one of the most ideal hair loss treatment methods comes down to its high success rate. Not only is it more successful than over-the-counter medications, but when the appropriate volume of follicular units is transplanted, the FUE hair transplant can net a 100% success rate.

The process of FUE helps to add more hair to an area of your head that may be thinning or balding. This is done by extracting hair from the thicker parts of your hair scalp or other parts of the body and grafting it to the needed areas. As one of the major hair restoration methods, FUE provides many benefits that other hair transplant methods don’t. This includes no scarring, faster healing and less risk.

At The Clifford Clinic, the hair transplant FUE is performed in 4 steps:

1) by punching incision around hair follicles,

2) extracting hair grafts,

3) harvesting hair grafts, and

4) implantation of hair grafts.

During the procedure, we use thin micro-tips of 0.7 – 0.9mm diameters that is according to the touch and thickness of hair roots, without damaging hair roots and disturbing natural structure.

By opting for hair loss treatment early rather than delaying it, many feel safe with the effects that are produced. You can begin seeing follicles grow new hair after 6 months, with the remaining follicles taking up to a year before fully appearing.

Other innovative approaches to hair-loss treatments

As technological advancements continue, there are new and innovative ways to help individuals combat hair loss. Two such methods include Regenera Activa and Fraxel 1927 Thulium Laser.

1. Regenera Activa

Regenera Activa is a new approach that works by extracting hair from the back of your head and mixing it with a potent solution. It then injects into the affected areas of the scalp. This immediately activates the dormant hair follicles, all of which can be done in around 30 to 45 minutes. Emerging as one of the new safest and effective hair transplant procedures in Singapore, Regenera Activa is a quick and pain-free method to encourage hair growth by helping to activate dormant cells under the scalp.

Regenera Activa is offered for both genders, by using local anaesthesia to reduce pain and discomfort. It provides effective results for individuals who do not require a full hair transplant, such as minor localized balding. One of the significant differences that Regenera Activa has over other traditional hair transplants is its cost. For an affordable price, Regenera Activa is ideal for anyone with a tight budget.

2. Fraxel 1927 Thulium Laser

Fraxel 1927 Thulium Laser, is available as a hair-loss treatment, with the potential of being able to cause improvements on the scalp. The name comes from the main laser, Fraxel, the laser wavelength being 1927, and Thulium Laser being the method of hair treatment. As another way of being able to make use of laser therapy to revitalize and nourish hair follicles, the method has been shown to improve blood supply to hair follicles and growth factors.

Comprised of 3 main phases known as the anagen (growth), catagen (transitional) and telogen (resting), the laser hair treatment offers another painless and effective way to create a fuller head. The Thulium Laser stimulates the scalp and creates the growth of stronger, thicker hair than what hair follicles can grow naturally. Due to this, the Thulium Laser provides hair rejuvenation by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, activating cellular metabolism and more. Optimal results can be seen within a few weeks.

FAQ

1. What is the typical recovery time for FUE?

As compared to other hair treatment procedures, most FUE patients can return back to their normal activities right after following through with their procedures. In general, most people should be able to return to work within a week of the procedure. If stitches are used, they will be removed within 10 days.

2. Is the treatment painful?

During the procedure, most patients will not experience any pain at all. Patients are numbed prior to the hair transplant procedure, where local anaesthetic is treated into the areas of the scalp.

3. What is the cost of FUE treatment?

The price of scalp hair transplant FUE costs around an average of $8,000 to $12,000. This is due to the number of hair grafts needed, which is averaged at $5 per 2000 grafts. At The Clifford Clinic, the price of FUE per graft is $5 for 1500 grafts and above. For Unshaven FUE, small cases and body hair transplant, the price may be slightly higher.

4. How long will I be able to see the results from FUE?

By 8 or 10 months, you should be able to see clear results. For some patients, this could be up to 18 months.

Some side effects of FUE can include infections, crust or pus drainage, bleeding, losing sensation around surgical sites, scalp pain, itching and swelling, and more. At The Clifford Clinic, our doctors have years of experience under their belt, and utilize professional microsurgery equipment to ensure that the scalp is minimally affected and preserved.
