Still, most patients are comfortable enough to return to daily activities after only several days after a double eyelid surgery.
- Effects are subtle, but very noticeable
The eyes are possibly one the facial features with the largest and most profound effects on a person’s appearance. This is why when putting on makeup, it is usually focused on the eyes and the areas around them. Specifically, it can make the eyes look bigger without any changes to the actual size. If you are considering to undergo as few procedures as possible, the double eyelid surgery should certainly be considered as it can give one of the most significant improvements for a minor surgery.
Different techniques for double eyelid surgery
1. Incisional upper blepharoplasty
Incisional upper blepharoplasty is the traditional technique used to surgically create double eyelids. In this technique, a horizontal incision is made along the upper eyelid, from which excess fat and skin are excised before the incision is closed. If needed, some muscles may be reattached. The eyelid crease is created by internal scar tissues from the surgery “anchoring” the eyelid skin down and pulling it in when the eyes open. Scars from incisional upper blepharoplasty are hidden in the eyelid crease itself and not usually visible.
2. Double Suture and Twist (DST) double eyelid surgery
The DST double eyelid surgery is the latest, and possibly the most popular technique for double eyelid surgery today. It is also known as the “Korean double eyelid surgery” as the technique used is perfected by a South Korean plastic surgeon.
In this case, the plastic surgeon makes 3 punctures at strategic points on the upper eyelid. A pair of sutures is passed through these punctures and twisted in a specific manner. This creates the eyelid crease by pulling the eyelids inwards. Excess sutures are cut and the loose ends are tied and hidden in the upper eyelid.
Compared to incisional upper blepharoplasty, DST is less invasive and has less visible scars. It is however, not suitable for those with lots of excess fat in their upper eyelids.
3. Infrabrow lift
Strictly speaking, the Infrabrow lift is not a double eyelid surgery. However, for individuals who have hidden or hooded double eyelids, lifting the skin above the eyes can have the same, or even better effects compared to the previous techniques by exposing the previously hidden eyelid crease.
In this case, the surgery makes the incision along the lower brow line and excises excess skin and fat as required, before finally closing the incision. This lifts and tightens the skin between the eyebrows and the eyes and exposes any hidden double eyelids. Scars, if any, are well hidden along the lower brow line.
Conclusion
For a minor and relatively affordable procedure, double eyelid surgery can certainly have very significant effects on an individual’s appearance and confidence. Hence, it is no wonder that it is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures today.
